The Lenten season is one of the holidays strictly observed by Catholics as portrayed in several traditions and practices done in different regions in the country. Some people reflect, visit churches to pray, and do acts of penance. Others take a different route and join the various festivals that are held year-round. Since I can remember, I have attended masses and joined the processions along with other devotees. It is my way of setting foot outside of my comfort zone - the territory marked by my Lolo as not allowed. When I was younger, I was told that bad spirits gain strength during Holy Week, primarily due to Christ's death, thus safety should always be observed. Growing up, I’d feel bad whenever I set off for a trip during this season. However, this year, I did something new and I’m sure that my Lolo would be pleased too. I went to a pilgrimage site called Krus na Parang. Situated in Lumangbayan (mountain) Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro. Krus na Parang resembles the Stations of the Cross. There are 14 traditional stations all the way up the mountain and people hike for an average of 3 hours to pray, to reflect and to thank God for the blessings.
