The Lenten season is one of the holidays strictly observed by Catholics as portrayed in several traditions and practices done in different regions in the country. Some people reflect, visit churches to pray, and do acts of penance. Others take a different route and join the various festivals that are held year-round.
Since I can remember, I have attended masses and joined the processions along with other devotees. It is my way of setting foot outside of my comfort zone - the territory marked by my Lolo as not allowed. When I was younger, I was told that bad spirits gain strength during Holy Week, primarily due to Christ's death, thus safety should always be observed. Growing up, I’d feel bad whenever I set off for a trip during this season. However, this year, I did something new and I’m sure that my Lolo would be pleased too.
I went to a pilgrimage site called Krus na Parang. Situated in Lumangbayan (mountain) Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro. Krus na Parang resembles the Stations of the Cross. There are 14 traditional stations all the way up the mountain and people hike for an average of 3 hours to pray, to reflect and to thank God for the blessings.

Note for the curious traveler: Lodging houses and couch surfing is not a hit in Abra de Ilog (Abra is a small town and we seldom see backpackers). (I am more than happy to welcome you, though, sadly, I don’t stay in Abra De Ilog. I can ask a friend to help you get around but if I’m not busy I’d be more than willing to go with you. No Promises Okay?!) 3. Once you’re in Abra and you’re staying near Brgy. Poblacion (Bayan/Capital), get a tricycle and ask Manong driver to drop you off at Krus na Parang checkpoint in LumangBayan. Peeps from our Munisipyo (local Government) will require you to log in before the hike. This is a personal request, please bring trash bags for your litter and avoid pushing during the hike. Safety First! If you’re an experienced mountain climber/ hiker it will probably take you at least 2.5 hours to reach the peak. It took me 3.5-ish hours since I pray and stop at every station. Also, I am not as athletic as the others T_T Devout Catholics, kids, adults, boys and girls should start the hike at around 2AM or 3AM to avoid the scorching heat on the way down. If you’re a hardcore climber it’s fine to start the hike at 6 AM. Oh, and bring lots of water and food. :) (Again, don’t forget the trash bags!) Entrance/ Environmental Fee: Free Best time to visit/hike: Holy Week Aside from Krus na Parang and (if you have a generous host) you may also get to see and enjoy Agbalala, Bisay and Mambel Falls. I wish I am not too busy right now. I will update this entry as soon as I can. Send me a message if you’d like to know more ^_^ | |
